This'll be a short post, but a celebratory one. Like I say, I no longer have to rely on G——gle for reliable fun fonts. I can host my own. My many millions if need be. Realistically I'll only ever use a handful and that's being generous. I mostly just keep it down to the two.
The one I use for titles is called Press Start 2P and is based on the type used for old Namco games from the 1980s, most notably Pac-Man. The font is a thing of pixelly beauty and intense nostalgia. And it turns out it is free for personal and commercial use! Happy days!
BEGIN THE ADVENTURE!
For the body, I use a version of Garamond... EB Garamond, which is likewise free for personal and commerical use. This of course is the font of the text you are currently reading. I'm a big fan of the Garamond typeface. Super typographically elegant and just an all-time classic. I use it for the public domain classic books I pubish. I replaced the G——gle one with a very slightly different one, but one that just happens to be that extra tiny bit fancier. The most noticeable difference for me was the numbers: 1234567890. You'll notice that only the 6 and the 8 have ascenders, and 34579 have descenders. In the previous version the numbers were all aligned to the same height as capital letters: boring. Also the italic Q is badass. Quintessential. You'll notice again the difference in italic Qs. The tail of the first one is rather short but is elongated monumentally when it's the first letter of a word. I shall have to find more words to use that begin with Qs. Let's see the regular capital Q. Now: Qa. Quo. Queen. Niiiiiiiiice. It's activated when followed by two letters! Knowledge!
I know that I can embed my own hosted audio now, and that the player looks pretty good with the default settings. I have yet to experiment with embedding my own hosted video, tho I don't think that should be much more difficult. I haven't tested it yet simply because I haven't looked very hard for an appropriate short little video. There are ways, too, in which you can condense the movie files so they don't take forever to load. Will I be posting a lot of audio and video? I hate rhetorical questions and so you probably know the answer already and I apologize. It's unlikely to happen any time soon that I'll be uploading media heavier than an image.
What else do I have yet to divest of to be as free as I can be, as least tethered as possible to any other third party services? There's FontAwesome, which I think I said in the previous post that I've forgotten what I even use it for. Special characters or some such? I think I use it elsewhere for social media icons? What need would I have of that on this blog? ... (the ellipsis of taking a moment to actually check) You know what, I wasn't making use of it all! Or maybe in one goddam post for one little thing? Maybe that one little thing will be broken now that I've taken out that script link to the FontAwesome website? I'll go back and check at some point.
GAME OVER!
